Abstract
The Chilean city of Valparaíso has experienced multiple historical urban transformations resulting from response to natural disasters. An example of these types of transformations occurred following the earthquake of 1906. This natural disaster led to the development and implementation of a Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Plan for Chile, which provided a regulatory framework for the standardization of reconstruction of structures in The Almendral area in Valparaíso. This urban redevelopment plan was subsequently utilized in response to the Valparaíso fires of 2014. This article provides a comparison between these redevelopment guidelines implemented by the Chilean State and the impact of these guidelines on Valparaíso and the cultural, social and economic development of its inhabitants.
