Abstract

The Turkish textile industry began in the 1920s, mainly with the export of cotton as a raw material. In the '70s and '80s the industry underwent industrialization and modernization and Turkish textile products began to make an impression on the world market. Today the textile industry in Turkey accounts for 28% of employment, and textiles and clothing make up 38% of the country's total exports. Of this 32% is classified as textiles and 68% clothing, manufactured items and knitwear. The article describes the Turkish textile and clothing industry with reference to raw materials, textile production, clothing, the structure of the industry, the relationship with the EU and the future.
