Abstract
Dealing with heavy weather : forecast and warnings. Heavy weather is an expression used in marine meteorology characterizing the impacts of wind storms on the sea. Wind storms are among the most significant weather extremes in north-western Europe. The forecast of such weather hazards is analyzed and points out the huge improvements over the past decades as well as the remaining uncertainties. Weather forecast aims to warn people and to meet their demand for an overcome risk. France and the British isles compose the geographical framework of this study. © Presses Universitaires de France.
