1203 children undergoing adenotonsillectomy over a 4-year period were given differing combinations of pre- and postoperative drugs, and anaesthesia was maintained with ether or halothane. A retrospective survey of the incidence of severe and mild vomiting showed that pre- or postoperative papaveretum produced the highest incidence of severe vomiting, whilst trimeprazine followed by dihydrocodeine produced the least. Although ether produced more mild vomiting than halothane, the incidence of severe vomiting was not significantly greater. © 1974 John Sherratt and Son Ltd.
