Abstract
this is a study of people who live on the slopes of Merapi, the most active volcano in Indonesia and they face the volcanic threats. This study is mainly based on field data, collected by ethnography method, in Tlogolele Selo Boyolali, Central Java. Ethnography is a qualitative research approach which explores the worldview of people and demonstrates their dailylife, how to see, listen, speak, and think. Based on Social Contruction of Reality Theory from Berger and Luckmann, this study tries to explore the social construction of people who live on the slopes of Merapi. Villagers living on Merapi constructed a system of religious belief. The villagers view Merapi as a friend not a threats. They construct knowledge and tradition as a local wisdom. As a local wisdom, the system of religious belief, kwoledge, and tradition have a special place in daily life of Tlogolele people. Local wisdom is based on Javanese culture concept ”memayu hayuning bawana”, which is applicated in several tradition slametan. Keywords: etnography, social construction, local wisdom
