Abstract

In contrast with highly mechanised diamond mining, corundum production methods are primitive. Marketing of the rough stone is equally unstructured, another contrast with the diamond trade, with its central selling organisation. Corundum is aluminum oxide, Al//2O//3. It is harder than all other minerals except diamond, making it a useful abrasive. Gem quality varieties are principally ruby and sapphire. The article describes mining practice and gem verification methods.
