Abstract

The aim of the present study was to evaluateb the response of surrounding tissues to newly developedb poly (trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) membranes. Furthermore, b the tissue formation beneath and the spaceb maintaining properties of the PTMC membrane wereb evaluated. Results were compared with a collagen membraneb (Geistlich BioGide), which served as control. Singlesidedb standardized 5.0 mm circular bicortical defects wereb created in the mandibular angle of rats. Defects wereb covered with either the PTMC membrane or a collagenb membrane. After 2, 4 and 12 weeks rats were sacrificedb and histology was performed. The PTMC membranesb induced a mild tissue reaction corresponding to a normalb foreign body reaction. The PTMC membranes showedb minimal cellular capsule formation and showed signs of ab surface erosion process. Bone tissue formed beneath theb PTMC membranes comparable to that beneath the collagenb membranes. The space maintaining properties of theb PTMC membranes were superior to those of the collagenb membrane. Newly developed PTMC membranes can beb used with success as barrier membranes in critical size ratb mandibular defects.b © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.
