Abstract

Physicians should be alert to the possibility of musculoskeletal infection because of its destructive potential. Acute presentations are emergencies due to the potential for permanent skeletal damage and the development of chronic infection. Chronic infections rarely require urgent management or empirical therapy provided the patient remains well. Chronic ulcers and wounds should be inspected with careful consideration of their relationships to underlying bone or implants.
