Abstract
Reading comprehension is a complex and fundamentally cultural linguistic activity. In education, the planning of activities is contemplated with the objective of developing and monitoring the reading comprehension of the students but not always with the necessary systematicity to produce the expected learning. Understanding a text is a cultural linguistic skill: working systematically on the processes involved is an essential point. The objective of this work was to verify the effectiveness of the application of a reading comprehen-sion program in a group of fifth grade students of an Argentine Primary School during 12 meetings of 50 minutes once a week working in the area of Inferences. The sixth grade students worked as a control group. Both groups were evaluated with specific tests before and after the intervention. All the measures showed a statistically significant difference when comparing the means of performance before and after the intervention; however, the results show the positive effect of the application of an improvement program since the difference is greater in the experimental group and they provide convergent evidence in favor of the studies that support the importance of intervening in the processes that underlie reading comprehension.
