Abstract
In this chapter, we outline the fundamentals of survey research methods to understand their role in evidence-based medicine. We outline key topics discussed in the methods sections of survey research papers. We discuss how to appraise a sampling strategy and the survey administration procedures. We demonstrate how to analyze the questionnaire design process, the final overall construction of a questionnaire and its key components, and the steps taken to minimize threats to validity and reliability. We compare various question types, response scales, and the corresponding methods of data analysis. We examine various types of survey administration biases and demonstrate how to interpret survey results in light of potential biases. Last, we summarize the common limitations and strengths of survey research.
