Abstract

The implementation of below grade construction techniques for buildings is an outstanding issue in routine building practice, particularly when any manner of building construction entails the participation of architects and associate architects. The need for an understanding and correct application of techniques and systems surfaces on a regular basis. This paper addresses the present situation and one fairly unknown technique: reinforced grouting. Reinforced grouting is a technique designed to improve the terrain via the controlled injection of grout through pipes fitted with check valves. While well known and frequently employed in engineering, this technique is seldom used in building construction. Nonetheless, it has considerable potential in this domain, not only for rehabilitating and underpinning existing foundations, but also in below grade operations in new construction. The present situation stems from the unfamiliarity with the application of the reinforced grouting to building construction, particularly for foundation underpinning, which affects not only system operation, but the difficulties involved in its implementation and control by the professionals participating in the process. The widespread unfamiliarity with this matter on the part of building construction professionals corroborates the importance of the subject of this article. The aim is to broach the issue in a manner that establishes documentation that not only explains but justifies system operation, thereby furthering awareness and understanding of the questions at hand by the professionals involved in building construction.
