Abstract

Laboratory and pilot tests were carried out and showed that anaerobic sludge is capable of effectively eliminating heavy metals from wastewaters with organic loads and of accumulating these metals up to several percent. Anaerobic sludge is the waste product of biological wastewater purification and is available in enormous quantities. Thus it is the cheapest possible reagent for heavy-metal elimination.
