Abstract

This study has two purposes. On the one hand, it seeks to develop a new classification and characterization of peripheral or remote universities. On the other hand, it seeks to identify the internationalization practices carried out in these institutions. The periphery is not given by the geographical position of the institutions, but by a series of multidimensional variables that position higher education institutions in locations distant from the imagined center. A large percentage of Chilean higher education institutions are located at different degrees of peripherality. The importance of this study is that it analyses internationalization practices of institutions that are on the margins of knowledge and general interest.
