Abstract
Pear decline, associated with the presence of ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’, significantly impacts pear production in Flanders, causing symptoms like reduced fruit quality and stunted growth. This study aims to develop sustainable control strategies by examining factors that drive symptom expression, including co-infections, stress conditions, and varietal compatibility. High-throughput sequencing will be used to detect pear decline presence and identify potential co-infections across Flemish orchards. This will be complemented with drone assisted remote sensing in the field. Additionally, a vector control strategy focused on Cacopsylla populations will be explored. Expected outcomes include refined detection tools, symptom management through targeted practices, and validated control measures, paving the way for a sustainable approach to mitigate pear decline disease damages.
