Abstract

Today there is an established technique to evaluate the thermodynamic properties of individual phases in an alloy system by assessing all the thermochemical information and the information on the phase diagram. This technique has been applied to a large number of binary and some ternary systems. From a practical point of view it would find its most important applications in higher order systems which are found in alloy steels. This lecture will report on an effort to build a thermodynamic database for iron-base alloys, suitable for predicting the formation of various alloyed carbides in steels. © 1990, The Iron and Steel Institute of Japan.
