Abstract

Both J. H. F. Umbgrove and Ph. H. Kuenen show that reef corals continued to thrive during the Pleistocene glaciations and into the present in the Moluccan region, Dutch East Indies. Kuenen's theory of the development of reefs in the open ocean is discussed in particular, in the light of the glacial control theory.
