Abstract

0-3 lead magnesium niobate-lead zirconate-lead titanate(PMN)/epoxy resin(EP)composites were prepared by resin casting method based on piezoelectric ceramic PMN as functional filler and epoxy resin as matrix. The effect of ceramic particle size on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites was detected by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mechanical analysis. SEM images indicate that the composites prepared with large particle size powder B(74 μm~100 μm) show head-to- head or shoulder-to-shoulder connectivity. However, in composites prepared with small particle size powder E(7 μm~35 μm), the most of ceramic particles disperses well by 0-3 connectivity in epoxy resin matrix. Mechanical test result shows that the flexural strength of PMN/EP composites increases with the drop of particle size. DMA curves of the composites are varied with the different piezoelectric ceramic particle size. With the particle size decrease, the peak value of loss factor(tanδ max ) of PMN/EP composite increases, and the composite prepared with powder E shows the highest tanδ of 0.724. With the particle size further decrease, tanδ max of composite prepared with powder F(0.15 μm~6.5 μm) drops a little, but damping temperature range is widened and the loss area TA increases.
