Abstract

Analysis of the Use of the Analogy with the "Plum Pudding" Guided by TWA in Teaching Thomson's Atomic Model: considerations and recommendations. In this paper, we analyze the effects of the use of the model Teaching with Analogies (TWA) on students' understanding of the analogy between the "plum pudding" and Thomson's atomic model.Data were collected in a second year of high school Chemistry class at a public school.Video and audio recordings were made from the discussion of class analogy and a questionnaire was applied after this intervention. We use content analysis for categorization of ideas expressed by students in the questionnaire. Results showed that TWA has enhanced the understanding of the relation of similarity in this analogy, but other gaps such as unfamiliarity with the analogous remained.Based on literature and the results of this work, we present considerations for TWA and argue that creation, critique and reformulation of analogies by students may be a promising approach for working with analogies in science education.
