Abstract
In feminist studies, not only gender relations and sexual diversity are challenged. In the same critical movement, the notion of subject, citizenship, rights, science and epistemology are shaken in their assumptions. This article uses these contributions and lessons for a critical review of the epistemological dimension of «mental retardation» and its main diagnostic criteria, the deficit in intelligence. This paper is based on the results of an ongoing ethnographic research on practices and policies of institutionalization of people with intellectual disabilities in a psychiatric hospital in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
