Transformation of Islamic Boarding School Education: Integration of Trilogy Values and Five Student Awareness In Curriculum Development

Abstract

This research examines the transformation of pesantren education through strengthening values, realized and implemented in programs at pesantren. Guided by a qualitative case study approach, the study explores issues, analyzes data, and presents findings systematically. The focus is Nurul Jadid University (UNUJA), an Islamic boarding school in Probolinggo, which has firmly upheld the Trilogy and Five Awareness of Students since its inception. These values are not merely slogans but serve as guidelines for curriculum development, ensuring their application at all institutional levels. The research is divided into two segments: (1) the Trilogy paradigm and Five Awareness of Students and (2) the implementation of pesantren education transformation through curriculum development at UNUJA. The results show that UNUJA preserves these values through five strategic steps: (1) integrating the pesantren curriculum with university courses by adding local content, (2) offering extracurricular programs to enhance student competencies, (3) organizing seminars, workshops, and public discussions, (4) implementing the Merdeka Belajar-Kampus Merdeka (MBKM) program while maintaining pesantren values, and (5) enforcing campus regulations via an ethics court for lecturers and students. The study implies that UNUJA successfully integrates pesantren values with modern education, strengthening its identity as a pesantren-based university. This approach produces graduates who are both ethically grounded and professionally competent, offering a sustainable model for Islamic education institutions navigating modernization. UNUJA's framework serves as a valuable reference for other pesantren in balancing tradition and innovation.
