Abstract

This paper considers the benefits to be achieved by using an optimum main engine load control mode that takes into account weather conditions. Its influence on voyage fuel consumption is analysed, and it is shown that such a mode of operation conductive to a vessel's possible speed range extension, can reduce a ship's demurrage, and thus possibly increase her competitiveness in the charter market The paper provides the new concept of weather heterogeneity and its degree of adversity evaluation, and also the optimisation technique for voyage fuel consumption minimisation.
