Abstract

A new method for measurement of the gasification rate of coal char by use of a fluidized bed is presented in which special care is taken to remove the effects of the complicated hydrodynamics of the fluidized bed and those of the elutriated loss of carbon. With an appropriate choice of the operation parameters, the bed could be assumed to be a differential reactor. The method was applied to the gasification of char by carbon dioxide. The rates obtained were compared with thermogravimetrically obtained rates. The differences in the results could be well explained by the differences in heating rate of char before gasification. The obtained dependences of the rate on carbon dioxide concentration and temperature were reasonable compared with previous works. © 1984, The Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan.
