Abstract
This book provides an overview of the ways to reduce the impact of earthquakes worldwide on people, buildings and human settlements and describes the manner of dealing with the consequences of earthquakes when they occur. It covers a wide range of economic and social conditions, looking at protection strategies in Europe, USA and Japan, as well as for rural and urban communities in developing countries. After an introductory chapter discussing the global incidence of earthquakes, their causes and effects, each of the chapters deals with a separate aspect of protection, including: preparedness; protection strategies; seismic hazard assessment; loss estimation; reducing disasters. Extensive references and an index are provided. -from Publisher
