Some PL functions on surfaces are not height functions

Abstract

We find some obstructions for piecewise-linear (PL) functions defined on two-dimensional closed compact manifolds (surfaces) to be height functions in R3 and prove existence of some non-height PL functions. On the other hand we prove that all PL functions on a sphere are height functions.
