Abstract
The implementation of US imaging can revolutionize regional anesthesia. There are diverse applications. Quality improvements in epidural and peripheral29 regional anesthesia/analgesia can be achieved. Teaching is enhanced and learning curves may be shortened. US may facilitate research that may eventually help make regional anesthesia more efficacious and safer than it already is. Side effects and complications may be reduced and when a complication occurs it may be more readily identified and controlled treatment may be possible with US guidance (e.g., epidural blood patch). Continuing evolution of US technology may further expand the potential for US in regional anesthesia/analgesia.
