Research on Cognitive Engagement in Graduate Students' Human-computer Interaction Supported by Generative AI

Abstract

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the graduate education model and driving the transformation of talent cultivation from knowledge imparting to high-order thinking quality development. To reveal the cognitive engagement mechanism of graduate students in human-computer interaction supported by Generative AI, 44 postgraduates completed discussions on specific topics with the support of Generative AI. They were divided into a high-performance group and a low-performance group based on their scores of the outcome texts. Through cognitive network analysis of the interaction content, it was found that the cognitive engagement of postgraduates was mainly low-order cognitive engagement in the whole; the high-performance group performed significantly better than the low-performance group in terms of high-order cognitive engagement and had a higher level of prior domain knowledge; The use of elaboration prompts effectively facilitated higher-order cognitive engagement.
