Abstract

Cardiovascular disease, especially coronary heart disease (CHD), is the main cause of mortality and morbidity in type 2 diabetes. Major trials have shown that a number of interventions are highly effective in reducing major outcomes including death; their effects are additive. Lipid lowering, reduction of blood pressure, aspirin therapy and stopping smoking are the most important preventive measures. There is a close link between all degrees of proteinuria and CHD in diabetes.
