Abstract
Children’s literature helps children build their understanding of the world, including what a man, a woman and a family should be like. This is a particularly relevant aspect to take into considera-tion when analysing the stories written by María de Echarri. She was one of the most important women in the Spanish Catholic move-ment and she was a prolific Catholic propagandist. Accordingly, her children’s stories, like her novels, intended to indoctrinate potential readers. She strove to inculcate in boys and girls her ideal concep-tions of femininity and masculinity as well as the limits of socially ac-ceptable behaviour.
