Abstract

Magnetotelluric 2-D modelling can be a daunting task where much of the work consists of stepwise model modifications and mesh design. The scheme proposed here is an entirely automatic strategy in place of the usual operator interaction. Model parameters (resistivities and thicknesses in log space) are regarded as polynomials of the distance along the profile, and the proposed scheme automatically varies the polynomial coefficients to minimize the misfit. © 1993, Society of Geomagnetism and Earth, Planetary and Space Sciences.
