Abstract

Introduction: This paper analyses the role of academic librarians at the University of Zagreb in the context of embedded librarianship, identifying existing practices, areas for improvement, and ways of enhancing their integration and impact. The findings contribute to academic discussion and provide practical insights for library management and policymaking, filling a gap in the literature by focusing on a Croatian academic context. Aim: The aim of the research was to examine the specific roles and responsibilities of librarians as well as their professional development needs to strengthen their integration into academic processes. Methodology: A qualitative research approach was applied. Data were collected through a structured online survey conducted between September and November 2023. Out of 34 questionnaires distributed to the heads of higher education libraries at the University of Zagreb, 23 responses were received, resulting in a response rate of 67.6%. The survey contained 31 questions divided into seven sections: demographic information, education, access and new services, scientific activity, promotion, programs and collaboration, and lifelong learning and professional development. Data analysis was carried out using Statistica 14.1.0.8 software, applying descriptive methods and correlation analysis. Results: The study showed that academic librarians at the University of Zagreb play a key role in promoting information literacy, supporting scientific productivity, and participating in educational programs. However, differences were noted in educational programs, with more initiatives targeting students than teaching and administrative staff. The survey also highlighted the important role of librarians in monitoring scientific output and managing digital repositories, while their involvement in publishing and institutional projects was variable, suggesting the need for deeper integration into academic processes. Conclusion: The results indicate the need for continuous monitoring of user needs, the development of more balanced educational programs, and stronger integration of librarians into institutional projects.
