Marcellus of Ancyra in Modern Research

Abstract

This article surveys modern scholarly research on Marcellus of Ancyra (died 374), beginning with Th. Zahn's monograph published in 1867. Included are a concise biography of Marcellus and an evaluation of his place in the history of dogma. Particular attention is given to M Tetz's attempt to attribute anonymous works to Marcellus. The author concludes that in order to attribute later writings to Marcellus one must presume that he became more orthodox with the passing decades. Not all scholars agree that this presumption is justified.
