Global, national and local perspectives; Introduction

Abstract

An introduction to a journal issue contends that globalization is a response to two sociological approaches -- world-systems & modernization theory. Globalization is differentiated from these approaches by its emphasis on the transnational relations between world-systems & on how cultures are generated at international levels; in addition, globalization approaches are characterized by a complex view of modernization. It is asserted that globalization & localization are closely connected, reviewing A. Appadurai's (1990) identification of the five aspects of global flows to illustrate. Contributions explore the relation between globalization & localization in the context of Indonesia, making three general observations: (1) how Indonesian culture adopts foreign cultures; (2) the state's predominant role at the national level; & (3) the regional nature & diversity of Indonesia's responses to globalization. 20 References.
