Abstract
This chapter provides, first, the brief of retailing with its definition and its types for understanding the retailing process. Then after that, the chapter contains different aspects such as the basic characteristics and trends in retailing, as well as emerging sectors in retailing. This chapter describes the effects of e-commerce which challenges retail industries and by which smart retailing evolves. The benefits are given by smart retailing to customers and the store operator. By some techniques, an admin can create some groups based on the customers’ behavior, interest, context, and location. The chapter describes how to create and manage smart retailing, and tools and technologies required are mentioned as Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, supply chain, and geofencing. Smart retailing also involves personalization where virtual dressing rooms, smart mirrors, and Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) beacon devices are connected with Google services that sense the proximity of a loyal customer. Different technologies like face recognition enhance personalization by using the technology called Face[note]. The chapter also includes IoT technologies which help a store operator with store operations. These devices send real-time data that can help to manage the customer traffic flow, place products on shelves, and maintain stocks on them. This chapter also contains the working procedure of BLE devices.
