Abstract

Industry is facing increased pressure to improve the performance of the processes it uses. One of the more important issues affecting the metal finishing industry is control of the quality of process effluents. It is necessary to ensure that concentrations of a wide range of contaminants do not exceed levels defined by regulating agencies such as the National Rivers Authority (NRA) and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP). Assistance with research and demonstration of new technical approaches to protecting the environment has recently been made available. The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) with input from the Department of the Environment (DOE) has launched a £21 million programme intended to assist business and other organisations develop solutions to environmental problems.
