Variation in the Plants Differentiated from the Tissue Culture of Pineapple

Abstract

The 448 plants established from cultures of syncarp, slip, crown and axillary bud tissue of Ananas comosus 'Smooth Cayenne' were assessed for leaf colour, waxiness, number of spines, presence of albino stripes and foliage density. Variant types for all the characters studied were common in plants regenerated from syncarp tissue while in those regenerated from slips, crowns of axillary buds, variant type were rare and were usually in respect of number of spines only.
