Abstract

BACKGROUND: Self‑management is crucial for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy to control and reduce side effects, thereby improving their quality of life. This study aimed to develop and evaluate a mobile application for the self‑management of chemotherapy side effects in gastric cancer patients, leveraging the widespread use and capabilities of smartphones. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This applied study identified the needs of gastric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy through a review of scientific literature and consultations with patients and expert doctors. The application prototype was developed using Java for the Android platform. Patients used the application for 1 month, after which user satisfaction was evaluated using the Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction version 5.5, the mHealth App Usability Questionnaire, and a researcher‑made checklist. RESULTS: The application features included patient profiles, side effect management, lifestyle guidance, and system capabilities. Services provided by the application included self‑assessment tests for chemotherapy side effects, with analyses categorized into three warning levels (green, orange, and red). Additionally, the app provided alerts for daily self‑assessment, medication reminders, therapy sessions, and daily lifestyle tips. CONCLUSION: User satisfaction with the application’s functionality and capabilities was 98%, indicating a high level of acceptance. The self‑management application can assist gastric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy in managing side effects, adhering to a healthy diet and lifestyle, managing medication, learning self‑management skills, and overall improving their lifestyle.
