Abstract

A chemical investigation of the organic-soluble extract obtained from the marine sponge Monanchora arbuscula, collected at the southeastern coastline of Brazil, led to the isolation of a new minor guanidine alkaloid, batzelladine Q (1), along with known alkaloids batzelladines L (2) and F (3), clathriadic acid (4), mirabilin B (5), ptilocaulin (6), netamine M (7) and the degraded carotenoid derivative 9-apoastaxanthinone (8). All compounds were identified by analysis of spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations of compounds 4 and 8 were for the first time established by the comparison of experimental ECD spectra with calculated CD data.
