Abstract

This chapter is a review of infant feeding practices. The first part of the chapter focuses on breastfeeding and includes current epidemiology of breastfeeding, and future goals for breastfeeding. The benefits and contraindications of breastfeeding are discussed, along with trouble shooting methods for common complications. Collection and storage of human milk is discussed at the end of the breastfeeding section. The second part of the chapter focuses on formula feeding. The history of formula is reviewed, along with the nutritional aspects of different types of formula that are currently available. Preparation, storage and the use of formula are also reviewed.
