Abstract

Two huge RC concrete box culverts are constructed underneath the Dhoho Kediri airport runway embankment. These multi-cell culverts serve as the main infrastructure facilitating the diversion of two crossing rivers and several irrigation channels, and one of them is under 24-meter-high fill, penetrating the slope at a skewed angle and creating huge unbalanced soil pressure. The seismic design loads for underground structures are characterized in terms of the deformations and strains imposed on the structure by the surrounding soil. Soil-structure interaction plays an important role in defining static and seismic loads. Finite element method with dynamic time history analysis considering three selected and modified ground motions has been performed for the seismic design of the RC box culverts, in addition to the racking deformation method. A comparison of both methods is presented.
