Abstract

Many types of chemical sensors have been devised for the detection and monitoring of chemical substances contained in gases (potentiometric and amperometric electrochemical sensors, solid state sensors, gasfets). A survey and brief comparison of basic principles, capabilities and limitations will be presented. The recent development of solid-state potentiometric sensors is related to intensive research in solid-state electrochemistry and micro-ionics. Besides the industrially developed oxygen zirconia device, solid electrolyte sensors for other gaseous species (Cl//2, SO//2, SO//3, H//2, CO//2) have been studied.
