Abstract

The objectives of this study were to determine the degree of physical-sport activity of Spanish teachers and assess the reason for practice in terms of their personal characteristics and working conditions. By means of a sample of 649 employed teachers (77.3% women and 22.7% men) with descriptive, transversal, comparative and associative strategy design, an online questionnaire was administered through convenience sampling. Regarding age, 4.01% were under 25 years of age, 63.48% were between 26 and 40 years of age, 25.89% were between 41-55 years of age and 6.63% were over 55 years of age. The instruments used were the MPAM-R (Motives for Physical Activity Me-Asure-Revised), PACE (Physician-based Assessment and Counselling for Exercise) and questions to know the personal and work characteristics of the teachers. The results indicate that only 12.5% of teachers are physically active and these teachers score significantly higher in all practice areas. The assessment of practice reasons varies significantly by taking into account variables such as gender, marital status, age, number of children, type of contract, years of experience and teaching specialty. No significant differences were found with regard to the type of management of the educational center where they taught.
