Abstract
Should the news media predict the end of the world within two or three months, I feel that most of us -I, at least- would laugh, or sigh, and perhaps wonder what kind of mentality it takes to make some poor devil believe he suddenly became clairvoyant or established supernatural contact with the Omniscient, or more likely, the extremes to which some people will go just to see their names in print. Should such a prediction be followed by the name of a renouned astronomer or geophysicist, however, I fear that our indulgent amusement would come to an abrupt end. Whether we would accept the alleged fact or not, we would realize that responsible scholar would not make such a statement without having some very good reasons - right or wrong- for doing so.
