Abstract
Site 436 is located near the crest of the outer swell seaward of the Japan Trench in a water depth of 5240m. The drill hole penetrated a depth of 400m and the cores represent the most complete record of the upper two-thirds of Neogene biostratigraphy of the NW Pacific seafloor yet collected. A noteworthy aspect of this sequence is that the accumulation of biogenic sediments begins abruptly in the M.Miocene. Earlier Tertiary deposits are represented by very thin layers of zeolitic clays, if at all. -from Authors
