Abstract

Pedestrians in Japan and South Korea have faced many similar challenges in the years since their countries have become motorized. The history of pedestrian transport issues in the two countries is discussed, along with several strategies of the Japanese and South Korean governments to meet motorized transport challenges. The most recent comprehensive, neighborhood-wide traffic schemes in each country - Japan's 'community zones' and South Korea's Site Traffic Management program - are also introduced.
