Abstract
This article examines Abdul Karim Soroush’s theory of contraction (al-Qabḍ) and expansion (al-Basṭ) in religious interpretation, as well as his contribution to the reform of Islamic Family Law. To address this issue, the author conducted a literature review, examining Soroush’s works as well as other data related to the topics discussed. The collected data was analyzed using content analysis techniques. Based on the research, Soroush’s theory of contraction (al-Qabḍ) and expansion (al-Basṭ) seeks to demonstrate that religion and understanding of religion are two distinct entities. Religion is absolute and unchanging. Religious understanding, on the other hand, is relative and dynamic. Furthermore, this theory contributes to the renewal of the study of Islamic Family Law, specifically by positioning this knowledge as a result of understanding religion rather than as a religion. Furthermore, in the process of reforming the study of Islamic Family Law, other disciplines outside of the religious sciences, particularly science and social humanities sciences, are involved.
