Abstract

A new flickerless 120 Hz field-sequential stereoscopic TV system has been developed. This 3D-TV system uses a time-multiplex technique, in which left and right video images are presented sequentially every 1/20 sec, using a high speed liquid crystal (LCD) shutter. The disparity limits of binocular fusion for static element random-dot stereograms using this 3D-TV system were determined. Horizontal and vertical disparity limits reached a maximum after 40 minutes (horizontal) and 5-7 minutes (vertical). Beyond these disparity limits the random-dot stereograms were preceived simultaneously and without depth. The disparity limits of binocular fusion for anaglyph stereopsis and conventional 60 Hz field-sequential stereoscopic TV system are also discussed.
