Abstract

The available results on the corrosion of pure metals at high temperatures in gaseous environments containing both oxygen and sulfur are reviewed thoroughly. Special attention is paid to the morphology and phase constitution of the scales formed in the various cases and to the kinetics of the reaction. These are further analysed in terms of thermodynamic predictions concerning the stability of the various possible phases, and detailed aspects of the reaction mechanism. Particular attention is devoted to the reaction at the scale-gas interface, to transport of matter through the scale and to the effects of preoxidation. © 1989, Walter de Gruyter.
