Abstract

The relatively neglected field of prodrug-activating enzymes is indicative of Professor Amidons very forward looking view of pharmaceutical product sciences. From his earliest interest in mechanistic oral drug absorption to the development of intestinal membrane permeability and absorption prediction methods, to dissolution in vivo and recently IPD methodology, he has always been at the forefront and leading the advances of the pharmaceutical sciences. Notably, the BCS, its impact on the whole diverse range of pharmaceutical sciences from drug discovery and development to drug product regulation, is recognized worldwide. Paraphrasing the words of one of the leaders in the in the pharmaceutical sciences, BCS is the most significant scientific advance in the pharmaceutical sciences in the past 50 years. Professor Amidon has been a true visionary leader in the pharmaceutical sciences. The 21st century pharmaceutical sciences and pharmaceutical products will be significantly improved, worldwide, based on Professor Amidons contributions and research advances in the pharmaceutical sciences.
