Book Review: Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adolescents and Adults: Evidence Based and Promising Interventions

Abstract

Reviews the book, Autism Spectrum Disorders in Adolescents and Adults: Evidence-Based and Promising Interventions edited by Matt Tincani and Andy Bondy (2014). Matt Tincani and Andy Bondy have compiled a comprehensive collection of review chapters delineating the current state of knowledge about treatment options for adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and resources for their families. Much has been published about autism services for youth—a simple Google search produces hundreds of books on treatments and services for youth with autism. However, transitional youth and adults seem to be the forgotten population in this literature. This text endeavors to bring to light current clinical options and raise awareness of areas for future research. The contributors to this multi authored volume include key national and international researchers in the field of ASD treatment and represent eclectic professional backgrounds with degrees including PhDs, EdDs, Board Certified Behavior Analysts, and a JD. The 14 chapters are divided into 4 key topic areas: introduction; transitioning from adolescence to adulthood; instructional and behavioral interventions to promote quality of life; and employment, independence, aging, and policy. Most chapters follow the same structural format: an introduction and overview of the literature available, a thorough discussion of pertinent theory, and a review of vignettes, clinical tools, and practical application of the material.
