Abstract

This article discuss the formative societies of Santarém-PA region by the analysis of its material culture, pointing to the existence of different ceramist communities, which has developed in this area since 3800 a.P. until the emergence of complex chiefdoms by 1000 a.D. The data suggests the succession of different groups in time and space that has probably contributed to the constitution of late multiethnic groups, which occurred in this and other areas of Amazonia, as it has been suggested by other researchers. Cultural connections with the area of Trombetas River, Central Amazonia and Upper Xingu have also been elicited.
